The idea for this map came from a friend who works at Idaho Mountain Touring, a local outdoor gear store here in Boise. The idea was to showcase the immense amount of public land Idaho has - more than 65% of the land here is designated public. I always knew Idaho had a lot of public land, but this map illustrates the point so well that even I was surprised to see the final result. In a time when public lands are seeing a lot of use and often over-use and abuse, this map shows how much is out there if you are able to put in a little extra work and go that extra mile (or five) past the parking lot. It inspires me to explore more and get further out, and also to really be thankful for the land access we have here in Idaho, and in much of the west.
